Few changes transform a bathroom as much as replacing a cramped tub and curtain with an open walk-in shower. The room feels larger, cleaning becomes easier and the whole space takes on the calm of a small spa. Getting it right, though, depends on careful planning long before the first tile goes down.
Think about the floor first
The most beautiful walk-in showers have little or no step at the entrance. That means the floor has to fall gently towards the drain so water never escapes into the rest of the room. Your installer will plan this slope along with a fully waterproofed base. It is hidden work, but it is the single most important part of the job.
Choose a drain that disappears
A long linear drain set along one wall lets the floor slope in a single direction. This allows you to use large format tiles across the whole shower without awkward cuts, which gives a cleaner, more continuous look. A slim tiled-in cover can make the drain almost invisible.
Fewer grout lines mean fewer places for grime to gather and a calmer surface for the eye.
Keep the materials honest
Natural stone such as slate or limestone, large porcelain panels or simple handmade tiles all suit a clean-lined shower. Pick one material and let it wrap the walls and floor. Darker stone feels cocooning and grounded, while pale tones feel airy and bright. Either way, a matte finish underfoot adds grip and a softer look.
Plan storage before you tile
Bottles on the floor undo a minimal design in moments. A recessed niche built into the wall keeps everyday items close at hand and out of sight. Line it with the same tile as the walls and keep it at a comfortable height for everyone in your home.
- One generous niche rather than several small shelves
- A fixed glass panel instead of a swinging door, if space allows
- A rain head plus a handheld spray for easy rinsing and cleaning
- Good ventilation to keep the room fresh and protect your finishes
Design for every stage of life
A level entry, a fold-down seat and a discreet grab rail can all be built in from the start without spoiling the look. They make the shower safer for guests, children and older family members, and they help your bathroom stay comfortable as your needs change.
Our bathroom team can help you plan the layout, waterproofing and finishes so your new shower looks simple and works beautifully for years.
